Gathered in the grounds of Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire on August 9th, the crowd of 120,000 could never have imagined this would be Freddie Mercury’s last performance with Queen. I’d first seen them supporting Mott The Hoople, and photographed the band at venues across the UK and Scandinavia. The band’s manager Jim ‘Miami’ Beach offered me a seat in a helicopter alongside a film crew, but despite their presence, no footage exists of Queen’s final show. Read more...

It was David Bowie live at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973 that ultimately mapped out my destiny. A man in Japanese dress ripped apart by two girls. Mime, theatre, rock music. I knew what - and who - I wanted to document. And I did. I felt slightly thwarted the following day by the announcement of David Bowie’s retirement, but in reality he had only laid to rest the ghost of my inspiration - Ziggy Stardust.

Queen - Writing Lyrics Down (Budapest, 1986)
He wrote some of those lyrics on his hand so that when he did the Freddie thing onstage with his arm out, he was actually reading the lyrics of the song. It went down well with the fans. They were one of the rare bands who always stayed behind backstage after a show. Most acts would leave with a police escort and be in the hotel within half an hour. Queen would always stay behind to socialize with each other and have dinner at the venue.
